2 the lady knows Shin and Kogoro's reps that means she knows Ran at least tertiarily.
3 she's an alumni of their school
4 Ran is famous in her own right. winner of Prefectural co-ed karate title. in the US that would be a State Championship title.
5 the lady doesn't have anybody else to turn to, her husband's friends have obviously distanced themselves from her. the lady doesn't mention any of her friends.
6 she was probably a part time worker and mostly full-time housewife till he died. for a widowed woman in Japan that house is large and extravagant and expensive. hopefully her husband left her lots of investments and life insurance etc. day care isn't free, she didn't mention her parents or her in-laws either.
7 what the cop on the bike said is pretty much true. there's nothing the police can really do. she can file a police report, it'll get entered into the computers and be just another random statistic. maybe they'll increase the patrols on foot and bikes and squad-cars in the area for a week, maybe two weeks. see if they can snatch up somebody who's doing B&E on houses.
8 what has me worried was the guy threatening her.
